Our Geosail of 2025 will start from Lochboisdale, South Uist. Geologist Angus Miller of Geowalks has a wish to explore the islands to the west of the Outer Hebrides and we are setting our sights on St Kilda if the weather allows. For those in the know, these voyages take us to the places that normal geology trips don’t reach! And we have a delight of geology within reach, including the ancient continental rocks of Na h-Eileanan Siar (the Outer Hebrides), and the much younger volcanic rocks of St Kilda and the Shiant Islands. There is the possibility of finishing our voyage back at Lochboisdale, or heading across the Minch to sample some of the geology of the Inner Hebrides, ending at Mallaig. We can’t plan the detailed itinerary in advance, but there is a myriad of possibilities with a delightful range of geology, scenery and wildlife.
There are many wonderful and eye-opening anchorages and coastlines to contemplate the megaannums it has taken to create them. We immerse ourselves in this time travelling journey, get in close to the coast to the geology of inaccessible places and marvel at the wonderful wildlife and culture of the Hebrides.
We will meet in Lochboisdale, South Uist in the early afternoon of Saturday 21st June. Our Geosail ends on Saturday 28th June at midday (times to be confirmed once the Calmac ferry summer timetables are available).
